Record-High Theft Rates Since Statistics Began

Theft is booming — the figures are at record levels. In 2014, 20,292 thefts were reported in Stuttgart, the highest number since official records began in the 1970s. Pickpocketing, in particular, saw a dramatic increase of 36.1% compared with the previous year. Even in 2023, 16,690 theft offences were still recorded.

Offenders use a wide range of tricks and scams — among them the notorious grandchild scam and the gasman ruse. More recently, women, apparently of Eastern European origin, have been approaching men under the pretence of romantic or sexual interest, embracing them repeatedly, and stealing valuables or cash in the process.

Unfortunately, pickpocketing is extremely difficult to investigate retrospectively. Prevention is therefore key — and largely an individual responsibility: keep valuables out of sight, secure your bags, and don’t fall for common scams. For most other forms of theft, especially burglary, the detectives of Kurtz Detective Agency Stuttgart are your qualified partners. Absurd: Violence Over a Chewing Gum Theft

In May 2015, Stuttgart police reported an unusual case: two perpetrators stole chewing gum from a shop display behind bars. Two security guards witnessed the theft and confronted the offenders — who responded by punching one of the guards in the face. The second guard was forced to use pepper spray to subdue the violent thieves, who were then arrested by federal police — all of this, astonishingly, over chewing gum.
